Omaezaki City is one of Japan’s most important nesting sites for the loggerhead turtle. To help protect this endangered species, the city has been carrying out community-wide conservation efforts for nearly 50 years. As part of these efforts, eggs found on local beaches are transferred to a hatchery for protection and monitoring, and the hatchlings are released into the sea. Some hatchlings are also raised at Omaezaki Elementary School as part of the school’s environmental education program.
Until now, members of the city’s loggerhead turtle conservation monitoring team have patrolled the hatchery to check on hatching activity, but there are limits to what can be observed in person. The new night-vision camera will allow them to monitor the hatchery remotely even when no one is on site, including during the darker early-morning hours. This will enable them to respond more quickly when necessary.
Since 2025, the NOK Group has supported the local community through initiatives including the donation of equipment for raising loggerhead turtles at Omaezaki Elementary School and fundraising activities in partnership with professional soccer club Júbilo Iwata. This latest donation forms part of those ongoing efforts. Through the introduction of the night-vision monitoring camera, NOK will support the protection of hatchlings and contribute to the loggerhead turtle conservation activities that have been carried out in the local community for many years.

We donated this monitoring camera in the hope that it will help, even in a small way, with monitoring the loggerhead turtle hatchery. Loggerhead turtles are an important part of Omaezaki City’s rich natural environment, and their conservation has been supported by the longstanding efforts of the local community. We hope that we too can play a small part in supporting these efforts.
Social Education Division, Omaezaki City Board of Education
Thank you very much for donating the monitoring camera to the loggerhead turtle hatchery. The camera now enables round-the-clock monitoring, helping us improve our conservation activities by allowing us to record valuable data on hatching and check the hatchery remotely. We also hope to use the footage captured by the camera for educational programs, tours, and other activities to raise awareness of loggerhead turtle conservation. We look forward to continuing to protect the future of the turtles that come ashore in Omaezaki City together with you.
